We received C score on the report of climate change on 2022

On December 15 2022, Koei Shoji Co., Ltd. (Office: Kanazawa, Yokohama City, Kanagawa, Chief Executive Officer: Mamoru Iwamoto) received a “C” score from CDP for our response to their Climate Change Questionnaire, the fifth highest score out of a scale of eight scores (A, B, B-, C, C-, D, D-, and F).

It is rare for small and medium-sized enterprises such as ours to receive a “C” score. It shows recognition of our transparency and commitment towards climate change issues.

■About CDP

CDP is an international non-profit organization headquartered in London that runs a global disclosure system for companies, investors, and regions to manage their environmental impacts, such as climate change, water resource protection, and forest conservation.

The survey on climate change covers more than 9,500 companies worldwide and rates their effort on a scale of eight (A, B, B-, C, C-, D, D-, and F) in terms of setting targets for climate change, business strategy, awareness of risks and opportunities, and disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions.

In the current financial year, we submitted our voluntary response to the CDP Climate Change Questionnaire for the first time and received a “C” score, the fifth highest score possible.

■Koei Shoji’s Initiatives on Climate Change

We have established an ambitious environmental target to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from our business activities by 42% by 2030 from the base year of 2020 and have been certified under the “Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi*)” which is an international environmental initiative.

For Scope 3 emissions, we will set and implement  more detailed reduction targets through cooperation with companies within our supply chain.

This is the same level of commitment that major companies are adopting, and our  CDP scoring means that our climate change initiatives and information disclosure have been recognized as being at a high level by international standards.

Main actions to achieve reduction targets

Scope1 We will aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and consider the introduction of electric vehicles, etc.
Scope2 In addition to considering the introduction of renewable energy and energy-saving measures, we plan to offset our electricity supply by using  non-fossil certificates or J-credits.
Scope3 We have measured emissions in each category. Going forward, we will set more detailed reduction targets and implement them through cooperation with companies within our supply chain.

Koei Shoji will continue to contribute to the creation of a sustainable future society by creating new value together with various stakeholders to address social issues such as climate change.

*SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set science-based emissions reduction targets. It is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The reduction targets are consistent with the levels required by the Paris Agreement. The goal is to limit global temperature rise to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
